It’s 8 months after the Illuminati decided they couldn’t kill alternate earths, even though this would mean the end of 2 universes.
.
The #Avengers have split up.

Namor and the cabal (made up of villains like #Thanos and Terrax) have been dealing with the incursions ever since. And they’re having a blast killing the superheroes from those alt earths. This weighs on #namor’s conscience. They’ve also told the world about what’s been going on.
.
#Sunspot has bought AIM and together with #Thor and #Hyperion are looking for the cause of the incursions. Starbrand & nightmask join them.
.
The illuminati have gone underground and are researching ways to stop the incursions. That are also on the run from the Shield Avengers led by Steve Rogers.
.
The shield avengers seem to focus on hunting the illuminati, because who cares about incursions anyway, right? After all the villains seem to be handling it well. And when they kill worlds it’s okay, but when avengers do the same then we have to hunt them down. I’m not sure what their plans are, but so far this government led team is totally useless.
.
So this book sets the stage: in face of a huge crisis, earth’s heroes are divided and  are wallowing in moral indignation. No one is working together and the world is only alive because Thanos & Co saved our butts. Quite the situation, right? I absolutely love this shit! And I have to read vol 2 asap.

Sara Pezzini makes a few interesting choices in this book that both lead to bad guys not making it out alive. (yep its my pet peeve, bear with me!)
.
In the first story the apparant death of a child molester was her intention.
.
But in the 2nd story she wanted to bring the bad guys (thieves of intellectual property) to justice, but she made the mistake to trust #AphroditeIV and they ended up dead.
.
She is playing judge and jury here. An odd habit for a superhero who is also a cop. I feel her decision in the 1st story is justified, but I do wonder if it will have consequences in future storylines.
.
So yeh, now I’ve added #witchblade to my wishlist. Who would have thought that?
.
And hey, I never thought I’d live to see the day that the Witchblade armor covered up Sara from head to toe! What happened to the fanservice? 😱🤣 She even qualifies for #tinheadthursday now 😉

So my friends and I went to see a movie…

Kinda wish we hadn’t. But I had gotten my hopes up after I read that #chrisclaremont himself liked it. I honestly do not understand why he liked it. They didn’t use any of the themes from his comics.

.

.

.

SPOILERS

.

.

.

.

One of the main themes in the comics is that the x-men love Jean Grey but they also realize how dangerous she is. And that perhaps it’s better if they end her life. That is the strong emotional dilemma that people wrestle with. The shi'ar represent the greater good who want to save the universe from dark Phoenix and the x-men want to save their friend. .

But in this movie all the emotional drama comes from people dying because of Jean’s powers. To me it feels like a cheap shortcut. Originally it was the power that corrupted Jean. In this movie, people died, #Xavier played mind games and those things caused Jean to be unstable.

.

And instead of the shi'ar who want to kill #Phoenix to protect the universe from her dark side, we get the m'bari who want to use the power for revenge and to conquer earth. No shades of gray. Just some evil guys we can punch.

.

The movie implies that people go evil because of other people dying and they can’t deal with it. There is a scene with #nightcrawler that seems to sum up the whole theme of the movie. He tries to save a soldier but he teleports him to safety just a second too late and the poor soldier doesn’t make it. Nightcrawler reacts to this by going berserk and killing all the bad guys he can find. Nightcrawler, aka the most pure and innocent and compassionate member of the team. Seriously, Wtf guys?!

And that is basically what happens to Jean Grey as well. She finds out she caused her mother’s death and then she accidentally (?) kills Raven. And there goes her sanity.

That really isn’t what the original theme was. What happened to “power corrupts even the best people?” in the comics it was the power that brought out Jean’s dark side. In the movies it was trauma caused by the death of loved ones.

Those are two very different themes. Both have their merit, but sadly the movie didn’t resolve its theme at all. And I really think the theme of the comics is the harsher truth. I guess Fox didn’t have the balls to go there.

So yeah, it was very disappointing on a thematic level.

.

Ok end of rant.

Alters is one of the best new superhero books I’ve read in quite a while. They managed to strike a good balance of superhero stories and stories about Chalice private life.
.
I had expected that the story about chalice transitioning from male to female would dominate the book, but it doesn’t. It is, of course, the element that stands out because one rarely sees this in comics.
.
And it’s done very well and handled with care and respect. It’s all about the people and doesn’t try to push any agendas. And I’m glad it’s an ongoing plot that doesn’t get resolved in one tpb. I’m looking forward to how things play out. .
The superhero stuff has a bit of an x-men vibe, which is something I really like. And it’s different enough to keep me engaged.
.
When I finished the book I really wanted to see how both storylines continue. There wasn’t much of a cliffhanger but they got me hooked nonetheless. Gotta get me vol 2!

#topvarianttuesday I finally found a copy of the penultimate issue so I could read this at long last. Thanks for the tag @ferdi_vl710
.
I absolutely loved it! Perfect ending for a wonderful series. I hate to see this go, because there aren’t many superhero books out there that deliberately & successfully play with the genre conventions while still remaining a true superhero comic.
.
I mean, it didn’t try to redefine the genre but it took it where few others dared to go.
It tackled many of my pet peeves, and answered a whole slew of those nagging ‘what if’ questions.
.
It dared to question the rules that most superheroes take for granted. And to my delight, Mark did not go to the dark side, even though he does kill his enemies. And power doesn’t corrupt him, even though he uses his powers to change the world (and universe) for the better rather than to preserve the status quo.
.
Kirkman himself also never really stayed with any status quo for too long and that really kept this book fresh and full of surprises.
.
I just wish there would be more. This final issue is chock full of story ideas. Any of these glimpses of the future could be full blown storylines. There’s enough material to last another 144 issues!
.
Anyway, let’s end this rambling with a big thank you to @realrobertkirkman (if that really is the account of the actual Robert Kirkman) and to @ryanottley and #corywalker .

Slack Wyrm #289

Gotta love this one! It’s a great webcomic series!

More #WolverineWednesday. So @thundersnowcomics asked me why I dislike this #savagewolverine story by #FrankCho.
I’ll try to keep this short. BEWARE SPOILERS AHEAD!!
.
.
.

First, Amadeus Cho decides to play god. See how it goes down in the 2nd picture

Second, when the fighting starts a lot of indigenous people die. Amadeus does not care, but when Shanna the she-devil gets mortally wounded, Amadeus uses his divine influence to have the tribe shaman save her life. And only her. Who cares about them indigenous warriors anyway?

Thirdly, the indigenous people fight to protect an ancient prison that holds a big evil monster. This prison also disables all electronic devices, which is why shanna’s plane crashed there. To get off the island, they need to turn off the prison machines. Amadeus and his worshippers fail to stop Wolverine, hulk & shanna from destroying the prison.

So not only do our heroes fail and unleash an ancient evil, they have also killed dozens of warriors who were actually protecting the planet. (but again, nobody seems to care about them at all. Not even their tribesmen).

Tl:dr morally reprehensible behavior from the heroes combined with Neo-colonial undertones make for a dodgy adventure story. I feel like such an SJW right now. At least I enjoyed the cheesecake factor. 😉

Pfew!

Next review, I’ll pick something I like.

First, it’s fascinating because she is the father. You see, Amanda changes into a male monster. This was never explicitly mentioned until her son showed up and called her ‘father!’

I had been suspecting that the monster was male since it doesn’t look feminine at all. Not like she-hulk or anything. So when the reveal came, I was cheering! Another great twist by Kirkman.

Best thing is that it’s played straight. It’s not presented as a joke as these genderbending themes often are. Kirkman stays true to the emotional impact of the reveal. That’s definitely worth some praise.

Secondly, I really dig the whole saga of Robot & Monster Girl. They get stranded on an alien planet where they live for centuries and become the rulers of that world. It was presented as a long running subplot and often side story. And it finally continued in the main story when those aliens attacked earth. I love it when a writer takes the time to build up towards a grand finale.

This approach made sense since these two weren’t the main protagonists of the book. It’s worth telling because their story is full of twists and turns. And it questions their motives at times too.

Power seems to corrupt Robot. But at the same time the harsh measures he takes like imprisoning and later isolating/exiling the former royal family all make perfect sense.

Because, once freed, the former royals do strike back and regain their power by defeating Robot with Monster Girl’s help. This is one of those times that an act of mercy towards one’s enemies ends badly!

Nolan will experience it again later in the book, when his decision to let Thragg live backfires big time. And Mark has a similar experience with Dinosaurus. It seems to be a theme with Kirkman!

At times the Robot/Monster Girl subplot was more interesting to me than the main story. And that means a lot, considering Invincible’s high quality engaging main stories.

I often wished Kirkman had devoted a mini series to these two and their adventures. But that’s a stretch in today’s comic marketplace. I’m glad he found room for it in Invincible.

Stories like this one are why Invincible truly is “the greatest superhero comic book in the universe”. Kirkman continuously takes the book in directions that mainstream superheroes dare only touch upon.

And he does so without trying to be revisionist about it. This is no Watchmen trying to redefine the genre. Instead Kirkman takes many superhero genre tropes to their almost logical conclusions. Once you have seen him do it, you’ll wonder why no one has done it before.

The answer is, of course, obvious. To do what Kirkman does, you’ll have to change the book’s status quo again and again. And that’s something mainstream comics don’t want to do. However, I think they should because it makes for a much better reading experience!

This is why I am incredibly sad to see this series come to an end. I realize that’s also part of breaking the genre mold, but it’s still such a shame.

I hear Kirkman isn’t planning to do another superhero book after Invincible ends, but I hope one day he’ll change his mind.

Today’s #December_CoverartChallenge theme was “Worst Run Ever”

This was a tough one for me. Not because of a shortage of candidates but because I got rid of most of the usual suspects.

I sold DK2 & Brand New Day & post Claremont 90’s uncanny X-men (the Portacio run), and I gave away Spider-Man: Chapter 1.

So all the stuff I really really loathe has been banned from my collection. But @cornelius.grayl reminded me of this boring snoozefest of a Superman tale. And hey, I still own a few issues of it.

Heavy handed moral stories with zero internal logic about a Superman who doesn’t want to be super. Some of the themes were interesting but they were badly researched or badly executed, as they often hammered the moral down the reader’s throats through waaaay too much expositional dialog.

Grounded sucks and #straczynski should have been grounded for writing this sh*t. But instead they gave him Wonder Woman too…

I just hope the New 52 erased both his runs from continuity. (now if only Marvel would do the same for his Spider-Man run, especially his swan song and let’s not forget the loathsome Sins Past story.)

Well that’s enough bitchin for me!

I’m still unsure how Miles and his past life in the ultimate universe fits in the post secret wars marvel universe. Apparently this universe already has another Miles Morales… And both Peter & Miles remember their inter-universe team-up from the Spider-men mini series.
-
All that aside, I do still love Miles’ solo book. It has had its ups & downs, but overall Bendis has done a great job with Miles & ultimate Peter Parker before him.
-
I wish they’d revive the original title of this book when they go back to legacy numbering. Being adiectiveless is kind of lame.
